“My neck always hurts. Sometimes it kills me so bad, I cannot think and have to go lie down. It all started when I injured my neck years ago. When I get stressed out it is the worst. Well, it doesn’t take much to stress me out nowadays. It’s always the back of my head and neck. I wish I could cut it out. Then maybe I could think and remember better. The last time I had a massage she said my neck and shoulders were the tightest she had seen in months! Nothing seems to help for any length of time. I’m so frustrated!”

This is a very common presentation of the migraine syndrome. Frequently their problems are compounded by overmedication—either by self-medicating or prescription drugs. Often there is a history of injury to the neck, for example, whiplash. Often they have been to the chiropractor and have been told there neck is so far out of alignment that the curve in the neck is reversed. The curve in the neck is straightened or reversed because of painful spasm. The trigeminal nerve (sensation of the face) and the cervical (neck) nerves are adjacent to each other in the brain stem (the base of the brain). What affects one affects the other. Migraineurs who smoke usually will develop neck problems. It is absolutely essential for the migraineur who smokes to abstain! Smoke is a smell. The sensitivity to the smell is the problem! Also secondhand smoke and perfumes are major problems. The patient can develop extreme sensitivity to stress and after years with frequently develop fibromyalgia.

Neck pain can be debilitating and frustrating. The migraine syndrome makes neck pain make sense. No matter what underlying conditions are there, the migraine syndrome can make it worse. This person falls into the migraine syndrome profile. Let me explain what I mean by the migraine syndrome. It is the outward expression of the body’s sensitivity to light, sound, smell, food, and/or stress. Some people are more sensitive than others; therefore, their reactions to different stimuli are greater. This sensitivity can be manifested in the body as migraines, sinus headaches, neck aches, palpitations, irritable bowel syndrome, motion sickness or vertigo, reactive hypoglycemia, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), panic attacks, and/or fibromyalgia. Now that’s a mouthful! Understanding what is going on with you is very important in the healing process.

Migraine is a serious health condition from which thousands of people all over the world suffer. Migraines are painful recurring headaches, accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, aura and visual disturbances. Migraine headache medicine can be prescribed to patients to heal or prevent the symptoms; depending on the severity of the problem they can be either migraine abortive medication or analgesics.

Migraine abortive medicines, also known as triptans, are used to manage moderate headaches; they do not relieve the pain itself as the analgesics but they counteract the causes of headache, mostly the dilation of arteries. This medication doesn’t come without side effects though.

The most commonly known side effects of migraine abortive medicines include facial flushing, a sense of choking, tightness around the chest and chicks. Fatigue and drowsiness, or thirst are also associated with migraine headache medicine, although these side effects are relatively short lived and, therefore not that serious.

The most serious effects of migraine medicine is heart attack; it may sound weird and funny, but triptans – the abortive medication – can cause heart attacks or even strokes while trying to deal with the sudden dilation of the arteries. People who have an overall good health and do not deal with heart related issues, triptans do not cause any problems.

However, people who suffer from carotid or other coronary diseases might experience a heart attack while the medication narrows the arteries. The flow of blood is prevented and the patient might get a stroke. This is why professionals and experts suggest that triptans should not be given to people with history in heart problems.

Mild pain relievers such as non steroidal drugs and ibuprofen or aspirin is recommended to people who have heart issues; although these drugs can relief the symptoms of mild or moderate migraine, they are safe and very affordable

Ironically, many people take drugs such as Prevacid and Prilosec for reducing heartburn, but in reality, stomach acid declines as we age. People think they have heartburn, because their stomach acid backs up in the esophagus due to poor digestion caused by a lack of stomach acid.

Put another way, stomach acid is required for absorption. A lack of stomach acid can cause poor digestion which can cause the acid to move up the esophagus. This displacement of stomach acid causes people to think they have too. But in reality, we don’t have enough!

How to improve your digestion?

First, stop taking acid blocking medications such as Prilosec and Prevacid. These medications are making your impaired digestion – due to a lack of stomach acid – even worse.

Second, start taking betaine hydrochloride – an acid that can support digestion when taken with meals.

A betaine hydrochloride supplement can be purchased at health food stores. In order to ensure proper dosage of betaine hydrochloride, you could start out with a dose as low as 150 milligrams and gradually increase this amount up to 600 milligrams. If warmth or burning is experienced in the upper abdomen, you should return to the previous lower dose.

In my practice, I have seen patients clear their perceived heartburn problems by taking betaine hydrochloride, and stopping their intake of acid blocking drugs.

This may seem paradoxical but the key is to do everything possible to improve your digestive function, and adding stomach acid (betaine hydrochloride) is a very good place to start. It’s also a good idea to support digestion by taking digestive enzymes in conjunction with the betaine hydrochloride. Digestive enzymes, such as pancreatic enzymes or vegetable enzymes should be taken with meals.

In addition to perceived heartburn, poor digestion causes our bodies to digest protein (and other nutrients) less efficiently, yet amino acids from protein are critical components of good health.

Protein deficiency can cause muscle mass to decrease. Also, our brain needs protein because the neurotransmitters in our brain are made out of the amino acids from protein. Both the function of muscle building and the manufacturing of neurotransmitters in the brain rely on the amino acids found in protein.

A long term affect of poor digestion is the tendency to develop food intolerances – when our body reacts to certain foods by creating antibodies against them. Food intolerances can lead to many symptoms such as sluggishness, fatigue, migraines, gastrointestinal problems especially diarrhea, inflammation & swelling.
