Mediation Model
What
can mediation do for you?
Mediation is especially
effective in resolving disputes where the parties will continue working
together, for example residents living in a nursing home. There are no
barriers to participation. One or more mediation sessions can be held
in the nursing home or assisted living facility. Often mediations can
be scheduled within days of referral, so there is no waiting for a resolution.
Mediation is a free, private way to solve problems by talking directly
with others involved.
How does it
work?
- When people have
different views about how a problem should be solved, a mediator brings
them together to discuss the situation.
- An appointment for mediation can be set up by contacting the mediation
coordinator (see Contact Us).
- After listening to your concern, an intake specialist will ask a few
questions to make sure the issue is appropriate for mediation.
- If it is a concern that would benefit from mediation, with your permission,
we will contact the others involved and invite them to participate in
the mediation.
- A time and place is set for the meeting at the nursing home or assisted
living.
- The mediation will allow all parties to completely tell their stories
in a safe and confidential setting.
- The mediators assist the parties in exploring solutions and options
to find common ground.
- The mediator remains neutral, not taking sides or making decisions for
either party.
- As issues are resolved, usually within a few hours, the agreed upon
resolution will be put in writing.
- Because the parties reach their own solution they are committed to the
outcome.
- There is no cost for mediation
